William Penn, Our Founder
Philadelphiawas a busy town. New houses were built every day. The city hadwide
streets and beautiful parks. “It will be a green, country town,” said Penn.
The dream ofWilliam Penn came true. In Pennsylvania, you can go to the church you
wish. When you grow up, you can help to elect the peoplewhomake the laws. William
Pennwas awiseman. Hewas a goodman. RememberWilliam Penn, the first Governor
of Pennsylvania and founder of our state.

William Pennmade friendswithNative Americanswhowere called Indians. He
talkedwith them. He atewith them. He played gameswith the Indians. Penn paid
the Indians for their land. He gave them things that theywanted.
He told the Indians, “The Great Spirit knows that I am your friend.”
The Indians said, “Wewill live in peacewith you as long as the creeks and
rivers run, andwhile the sun, moon, and stars still shine.”
