Two important
rivers
of Pennsylvania are the Delaware and the Ohio Rivers. Large
ships use these rivers to carry goods. Goods are things, or products, we need that are
made by people.
Look at thewestern part of Pennsylvania on yourmap. Do you see the Ohio River?
There are two other important rivers inwestern Pennsylvania. They are theMonongahela
River and the Allegheny River. Find them on themap. Many barges carry goods on these
three rivers. Barges are flat boats that carry coal, oil, steel, and other human-made
things.
Another important
waterway
is Lake Erie. From the
port
of Erie, ships sail to all other
ports on the Great Lakes. The ships sail to ports in the United States and in Canada.
Find the Delaware River on themap. Now find the city of Philadelphia. The port
of Philadelphia is very important. From
Philadelphia, ships go down the Delaware
River to the Atlantic Ocean. The ships take
goods to places all over the world. Ships
also bring goods from other countries to
Philadelphia. The goods are taken off the
ships and put on railroad cars and
trucks. Trucks and railroads take the
goods to other towns and cities in our
state and country.
Find the Susquehanna River on the
map. It flows through our entire state.
This river is too shallow for large ships.
However, people use the river for
recreation
, such as boating, fishing,
and swimming.
Reservoirs
are human-made lakes.
Water is held back and stored by
dams
.
Dams are used to create electricity for
homes and businesses. People also use
the reservoirs for recreation.
