Our State Symbols
What is a symbol? A symbol stands for something that is a real place or object.
Remember that wavy line that makes up our state’s border on the right side. Thewavy
line stands for the Delaware River. Computers have symbols. Street signs have symbols. A
red light is a symbol that means to stop our cars. The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is a
symbol of freedom. You learned about our State Flag in Lesson 2. Youwill learn about
our State Bird in Lesson 6. Now, let’s look at our other state symbols using poetry.
The State Animal

Whitetail Deer
is a common sight
in Pennsylvania forests and fields
Bushes and trees provide the deer
with plenty of hiding and shields

White is the color of
Mountain Laurel
A touch of pink can be seen in this floral
